Comfort from my Kitchen. . .

. . . A distinct smell, which was a mixture of the
dried leaves on the ground
and the smoke from the chimneys,
and the sweet, ripe apples . . .

It really is the season for comfort food!  I love it when the apples start to turn red and fall off the trees, that's when I know it's time to make apple crisp.  I usually make a couple of big pans full and have my kids come over for apple crisp and ice cream; I happen to like it with milk, especially for breakfast!  I know, it's not the most nutritious breakfast, but it sure is good.  My grandmother used to make apple pie for breakfast, so it  must be in the genes!

I thought I would share my recipe for apple crisp, it's been a family favorite for years.

Apple Crisp

6 cups apples
1 1/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
pinch of salt
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup flour
2 cups quick oats

Combine apples, sugar, cinnamon and salt together and put in a 9x13 baking dish.  Melt butter or margarine; stir in brown sugar, oats and flour.  Spread it in clumps over the apples.  Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Serve with ice cream!

Sometimes I double the topping, just because we love it so much...don't tell!

right before I popped it into the oven!

Ready to eat!

Have a wonderful week end!!

Hi Barb... Yum!! I can just smell it cooking right now! I only wish we could pick fresh apples from trees in Texas. Not the right climate! Looks like you are getting ready for Fall.. I'm ready myself and the weather today (80's) makes me ready for the cooler temps like the 60's. Happy weekend to you!!

I need to round up some apples. I have my grandmother's recipe and we just love it. Nothing more comforting than the smell of baking apples or the taste.

Barb, YUMMY! I made apple crisp yesterday too. Just an 8x8 pan for my daughter and me topping with vanilla ice cream too. :-)

Oh my, can I come for a visit? The recipe looks so yummy. The pictures of the Apple crisps were so good. Thank you dear friend for your sweet notes. I feel like I am running faster than ever. We have lots of PT and Doctor appointments and then a trip to be with Travis during his court case this past week. Looking for some relaxing moments during conference. Our mission call is still not here; which is probably a tender mercy; except that we are anxious to get going on it. Still figuring out some of Roger's medical issues. Love you much!
