It's already heating up here in the country! Today the high will be 89°, and it's only going to get hotter—99° by Sunday. I have a feeling I'll be spending plenty of time indoors, but that's okay. I can think of lots of things to keep me busy without over heating!
From my playlist today - I know many of you will recognize this old love song. It was very popular in July, 1955, the year I was born. It's still one of my favorite old love songs 💗
How was your 4th of July? Mine was filled with family, food and fun... Emphasis on the food!
We started on the 3rd of July at one of my daughter's homes. Her neighborhood always has a big fireworks display on the 3rd. It's loud and we hear lots of Oohs and Ahs and hand clapping. But we love to watch, always waiting for the biggest and brightest one!
,
On the 4th, we headed to another daughter's home for more delicious food, laughter, and family time. After we ate a delicious meal, most of the family headed into the big city to enjoy the fireworks.
For the past 25 years or so, one of our local businessmen has generously sponsored what has become the largest fireworks displays in Idaho. Sadly, this year's celebration was the last. With our city being one of the fastest-growing in the United States, the crowds have simply become too large to manage safely.
It's the end of a wonderful tradition that brought so many people together on Independence Day for so many years. We're grateful for all the years of spectacular fireworks, and it will certainly be missed.
After saying goodbye, we headed home to watch the fireworks in our own backyard, where it seemed like everyone around us had a good time lighting up the night sky. Why is it so hard for me to take a photo of a firework?! And the 4th of July was done... Until next year.
Around the farm - This little guy is growing like a weed! He found this little pole that my husband put up so the horses could scratch their bellies... He's trying it out, and liking it! So cute!!
He likes to be pet and scratched, especially now that the flies are bothering him. He has such a cute personality, it will be sad when they take him home. Hopefully, that won't be for a while.
A fun memory - This old photo came up as a memory from the 4th of July ten years ago. Clara is now 15, and Tanner is 12. They had been having such a fun day, but by nighttime, it was chilly and they needed a blanket to cuddle up under. Now for the rabbit-hole story—you know I always have one...
I keep a special little quilt tucked away for safekeeping, dreaming of the day I can wrap a future great-grandbaby in it. This past weekend, I brought it out to show my grandson and his wife while they were visiting from out of town. I originally made this quilt over 20 years ago during a dark time when my granddaughter, Averi, was fighting for her life in the hospital for 6 months (you can read her story here). I still remember sewing the seams when my daughter called and told me that the doctor thought that it might be time to turn off her machines. Looking at the quilt always brings back that heavy memory, but it also brings immense joy—Averi celebrates her 24th birthday this August. Reminiscing with my grandson was incredibly special because he was just four years old when he and his little sister, Taylor, stayed with us during that ordeal, and he still remembers using this very quilt. Sharing this history reminded me that this blanket didn't just comfort me; it wrapped my grandchildren in love when they needed it most.
A thought to leave you with . . .
"July is hollyhocks and hammocks, fireworks and vacations, hot and steamy weather, cool and refreshing swims, beach picnics, and vegetables all out of the garden." —Jean Hersey
I know there are so many terrible things happening all around the country - the heat and storms are terrible! I pray that each one of you will be safe.
