FOR TODAY August 23, 2011
Outside my window... What a beautiful day!! We have had wonderful warm days and very cool nights - perfect! Today the sky is perfectly blue, with just a very light breeze to keep things moving, absolutely gorgeous!
I am thinking... How quickly the summer has gone. Does anyone else feel the same way? I love summer, and I don't think we have had enough of it, but . . . I'm ready for fall, my favorite time of year.
I am thankful for... What few things I was able to grow in my garden this year. Today, I picked a big bowl of green beans, a few ripe tomatoes, a couple of cucumbers and some new potatoes. It wasn't much, but it was more than I thought I would get this year! I could make a meal out of just what is in this bowl!
A thought to share...
Yummy Baked Sandwiches
2 packages of dinner rolls (I used the potato rolls from our grocery stores bakery - 12 in each pkg.)
1 1/2 sticks melted butter
1 Tbls. Steak Sauce (I use A1)
1 Tbls. poppy seed
2 Tbls. mustard (any kind - I like whole grain mustard)
2 Tbls. minced onion or 1 Tbls. dried onion
1 - 2 pounds Deli ham, turkey or roast beef, cooked bacon (use as much as you want)
Cheese - Swiss, Provolone, Pepper Jack, Chedder, etc. (I like to buy the already sliced)
Slice rolls in half. Put the bottom half in 9x13 baking pan. I put 12 rolls to a pan. Layer the meat and cheese on the roll bottoms, then put the tops on. Our favorite is Turkey, bacon and Swiss cheese, and roast beef with pepper jack, or ham and Swiss cheese - do whatever sounds good.
Heat up the butter, steak sauce, mustard and minced onion until the butter is melted. Stir in poppy seeds and pour 1/2 of the butter mixture over each pan of rolls - bake at 350 for 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the rolls are heated through. They get all crispy on the bottom . . . Yummy!
I am wearing... Denim capris and a pink polo shirt.
I am going... Well, I went school clothes shopping with my daughter today. Emily will be in kindergarten this year . . . they grow up way too fast.
I am hoping... That the weather stays nice until the end of September! Me and my husband and all of our children are going camping the middle of September and I really don't want to bring a rain coat . . .
I am hearing... Soft music from my computer and way too much silence. My husband is still working nights and I can't get used to the feeling of being alone and the quietness in my house - I don't like it... :0(
Around the house... I have been thinking about doing some deep cleaning - I said THINKING about it. I still have to get the bathroom in the basement finished! I know, I know, we've been working on it since spring, but it is so hard to find the time to get to it! We need to finish painting the walls, lay the tile, put in the vanity and re-set the toilet. Now that doesn't sound like too much, does it?
One of my favorite things... Petunias . . . my petunias did wonderful this year, I guess they like the cool weather.
A few plans for the rest of the week:
Tomorrow - lunch with my mother and my sister - always a good day!
Thursday - the one day that my husband get off this week - I think we will take a day trip.
Friday - get some yard work done and maybe make bread.
Saturday - get my lesson ready for Sunday.
Sunday - church . . . relax!
Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

From the kitchen... When the kids came over on Sunday, we made Yummy Baked Sandwiches - they are so good, and very easy . . . wish I had a picture for you, you'll just have to take my word for it!

I thought this was the funniest picture! Christian and Taylor seem to be so interested in what Nathan is doing - I can just imagine him saying, ". . . I put that old tiger in a choke-hold and then I dropped him!!
We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.

This is the time of year I like to buy clothes, but not this year. It sounds like were getting the same kind of weather, very nice. I'm getting in the fall mood too. We had a very short summer, lots of rain and grey. I'm expecting I'll get cabin fever early this year. Have you heard any opinions on what kind of a winter were having? I can't do a lot of gardening at once, it hurts my back, but I'm gradually pulling things up and pretty soon will start cutting back some things. I'm borrowing the music from the LOTR's from my gd to listen to as I clean this week. Your sandwich sounds good. You should watch The Sandwich King on Food Network on the weekends. It's either Sat. or Sun. morning. He won the Next Food Network Star and made some amazing sandwiches. Have a great day. Linda
It has been a short summer! But I have to agree with you, fall is my favorite time of year! I love those sandwiches! Thanks for sharing! Love you!
Sweet thoughts from a dear friend; I loved your post today. I too feel like we haven't had a summer. It has been hot here; but there is still a feeling that fall is right around the corner.
Of course, I loved the pictures; our grandchildren are so adorable and your sweet baby grandson is way cute.
It seems strange that children are going back to school already. I always liked that they didn't return to school until after Labor Day. Thanks for sharing your recipe; I have had the sandwiches before at one of our family events. I loved it then; so I will try it soon.
Thanks for being such a loving sweet friend. I always love your comments on my posts. Love and hugs to you dear sister.
Yum to the recipe!!! And the baby is so precious. :)

I live your lovely pictures and heartwarming writing.
Beautiful thoughts.
That simple meal from the garden looks like it's fit for a king. (or the queen)
It has been a beautiful summer and I love Fall, I'm not ready for it yet. Last winter was the longest ever and I cringe at the thought of it coming so quickly.
Enjoyed your Daybook Barb, As far as summer, I am ready to say goodbye, until next year, it has ben a very long, hot summer for us, plus, like you my favorite season is coming, as a matter of fact I am going to begin to put few fall decorations out this week.~grin~
Your veggies look so good, ours are almost gone, just hoping the beans will produce. Your grands are adorable.
Thanks for sharing a part of your day!
Sue
Your veggies from the garden look wonderful. There is nothing like fresh from the garden! Your recipe sounds yummy. I've copied it and will try it soon. Every recipe you've posted and I've tried have been wonderful. Thanks for always sharing. I do hope September stays dry and that we have a long fall. Camping when the leaves start turning is a favorite of mine. Your pictures are great, especially chuckled at your comment on the last one. Always enjoy your Simple Woman's Daybook posts.Nola

I felt my heart skip a beat when I read 28 days until Fall...(like the word Fall is going to immediately change our temps)...Our night temps are in the upper 80's, way to hot...
