Update on Laundry Soap

I thought I would just do an update on my homemade laundry soap. I love it! You only use two tablespoons per load and it cleans so good and smells so fresh and clean. I have soft water, so if you have hard water you would probably want to increase the amount by about 1 tablespoon. If you are washing whites, and feel like you need a little boost, just use a little Oxyclean or any similar product. This soap smells just like my grandma's used to smell. It cost around $8.00 to make, but you get around 160 loads out of it - very economical.

My next venture will be to make hand and body soap - I guess the thing about using lye has kind of scared me away from it, but I am going to make some before Christmas - that is my goal. I remember my mother making laundry soap with lye. She would make it in the basement, in the laundry room - I remember her stirring it with a wooden spoon, then pouring it into molds of some kind (I was young!!) But I do remember you had to grate it to use it, and it smelled so good and clean.

I really love the idea of becoming more self sufficient by learning to make everyday things we use, like soap. You still have to buy the products to make it, but you can be assured that it does not have all the fillers and that it is so much better for the environment. It is also so much better for your septic system if you have one. Plus I love the idea of making my own, for me, there is a lot of satisfaction in it. Just another baby step toward "Simplicity".

Blessings, Barb

That is awesome! I'm tempted to make my own. Whenever I go to buy laundry detergent I am appalled at the price for just 150 loads. It's ridiculous.I think I might have to try this out!
