Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY - September 4, 2012

Outside my window... It's dark and cool.  The days are getting noticibly shorter, and the nights longer . . . I like that!

I am thinking... How nice it will feel to crawl in bed tonight after a long day.

I am thankful for... Pumpkin muffins!  Chris and Diana brought Brody over tonight to get a haircut, and brought pumpkin muffins for a sweet treat, they were delightful!

A favorite quote . . .

Taken a few years ago in one of my favorite places!
"A woodland in full color is awesome as a forest fire, in magnitude at least, but a single tree is like a dancing tongue of flame to warm the heart."
  ~Hal Borland~

From the kitchen...

Whole Chicken in the crockpot

2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon thyme
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon cayenne (red) pepper
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 onion
1 large chicken

Combine the dried spices in a small bowl.  Loosely chop the onion and place it in the bottom of the slow cooker.  Remove any giblets from the chicken and then rub the spice mixture all over. You can even put some of the spices inside the cavity and under the skin covering the breasts.  Put prepared chicken on top of the onions in the slow cooker, cover it, and turn it on to high. There is no need to add any liquid.  Cook for 4 – 5 hours (for a 3 or 4 pound chicken) or until the chicken is falling off the bone!

This will be dinner tomorrow night!

I am wearing... My nightgown and housecoat - you really don't want me to describe them as they are very plain and old ladyish!

I am creating... So many things . . . in my dreams!

I am going... To work at the Humanitarian Center tomorrow.  It will be a wonderful day!

I am reading... I just got done reading the most wonderful book called, "Between Shades of Gray", by Ruta Sepetys.  A wonderful, chilling and inspiring book about a young girl from Lithuania,  and the trials she went through when she, her mother and brother were taken to Siberia to work in a labor camp during WWII - it truly is a must read!

I am hoping... That my wonderful son has a great birthday tomorrow!  He will be turning 34 - Happy Birthday Chris, we love you!

I am hearing... Just the soft music on my blog. . .

Around the house... I won't get a thing done tomorrow, but I do plan on starting some Fall cleaning.  I seems like everything just gets so dusty during the summer, especially in the country!

One of my favorite things...  Scented candles - especially cinnamon!

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Tomorrow - Humanitarian Center
Thursday - Hair cut - Hooray! We might go to the fair . . . maybe . . . it's a big maybe!
Friday - I think I will make a batch of chili sauce with some lovely tomatoes Jessica gave me.
Saturday - Cleaning.
Sunday - Church.

Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

Emily and Brody

I love to give my grandkids the camera and let them take pictures - it just gets the creative juices flowing!  These are just a couple of the great shots that they took while we were camping!  I do let them take my camera, and it is expensive, but they are always very, very careful.

  1. I can identify with this daybook entry. Can't wait for fall; hair cut is the 12th; that chicken sounds dang good; I went to church last Sunday and was getting the organ ready to start playing and I got sick and had to find a replacement 10 minutes before church started; I am wearing - well - unmentionables while typing this and. . . the soft music of your blog is lowering my blood pressure by a hundred points.

    Ahhhhhhhhhhh..................

So many good things going on at your place!
    Happy birthday to your son.

Going to copy the recipe down and give it a try.
I bought a bunch of whole chickens at the grocery store the other day.
They were on sale for under a dollar a pound, and all natural; how could I not stock up?!

Love the pictures of your grands. They are so stinking cute!!

Enjoy the week, and your time at the humanitarian cntr.

  6. Hi Barb,
Hope your time at the Humanitarian Center goes good today. We played shuffle this morning and now I have the rest of the day to myself.

Happy Birthday to your son, Chris. My Chris will have a birthday on September 16th.

What happened with the $5 you had to pay. If you posted about that then I missed it.

Love all the pictures of the kids. Hugz!! Have fun at the Fair if you go.

  10. Barb, Rather than close up shop completely, I've changed it all around with a new title/address. I can not promise that I can always visit and comment but I will try. I've been struggling with PTSD lately and have been feeling badly that I have neglected my blog friends. I think by writing more down to earth (not as flowery cottage) will help. Anyway this blog may not always be so sweet. You can find me by clicking my name. Thanks for listening.

  13. I'm so glad you found my blog. It lead me to YOURS!!!! Yay! I jumped up from my desk and took out a whole chicken from the freezer and this will be our dinner tonight. Sounds so good.

Reading through your post today made me wonder if we aren't sisters by another mother. It also made me think about the things I am thankful for -- a post for another day.

Sweet blessings for a beautiful day!
