Finally Friday . . .

I'm always so happy when Friday finally rolls around.  I'm not sure why, I think it's a throwback from when I was working!  But, nevertheless, it always makes me smile.

Hey, it's officially Fall!!  For me, that means it's time to break out the decorations, and start making all things pumpkin-spice...or at least, spicy.

Last week, I got a big box of pears, and they were beauties!

Sometimes I forget how much I love pears, until I cute one up take a bite into one,  and let the yummy juices just drip down my chin! I can remember my mother canning pears, it was never my favorite job, because of the drippiness!

Years ago, when my son was little, he had some kind of virus, and had terrible sores in his mouth.  I called the doctor and he told me that it was a tummy virus, and that pear juice was really good for the tummy.  It was in August, and pears were just coming on...they were a life saver, and helped clear up the sores in his mouth.  I'm not sure why, probably because they are a mild fruit and don't have a lot of acid in them, but they did the trick!

I canned most of the pears, about 14 quarts, and froze about 2 gallons to use later.  Of course I left some out to eat fresh... ;0)

Today, I'm going to make, Brown Butter Pear Crisp, doesn't that sound delicious?!  The recipe if from Life Made Simple - here's the recipe!

Browned Butter Pear Crisp

Pear filling:
6 Bosc or Bartlett pears, cored and cut into 1/4" slices
1 Tbl. lemon juice
1/4 c. granulated sugar
1 1/2 Tbl. corn starch
1 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp. ground cardamom (optional)

Topping:
1/3 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. old fashioned oats
1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
4 Tbl (1/2 stick) butter

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Set aside an 8x8 square baking dish or a medium size gratin dish.  IN a large mixing bowl, toss the pears in the lemon juice.  In a small mixing bowl whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon and cardamom.  Sprinkle over the pears and toss to coat, pour into the baking dish.  In a medium size mixing bowl whisk together the flour, oats, brown sugar,  salt,  baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon; set aside.

In a small saucepan set over medium heat, add the butter.  Heart until the butter foams then begins to brown and become speckled ( about 3-5 minutes), whisking every so often.  Pour into the bowl with the topping ingredients and mix until crumbles form.  Sprinkle over the filling.  Place in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes or until pears are tender and topping is golden brown.  Remove from the oven and allow to cool 20 minutes, serve warm.

Have a wonderful week-end...be safe~

**  I made the pear crisp and it was amazing...its a keeper!

Ohhhhh...pears are my very favorite fruit. How pleasant to see all those canning jars filled with pears...like gold in the bank. Thanks for mentioning the medicinal qualities of pears, too. Have a happy weekend.

Yay for Fall! At last! I promised Hubby no decorations until the official date.. so now I can go crazy.
I love pears... I have never done canning but now I like in the US I MUST give it a try. And the crisp looks delicious. Im guessing a crisp is like a British crumble ...but with oats added
Lovely post

Pears are one of my favorite fruits. Thanks for the delicious recipe. I wish I was ambitious enough to can again. I used to love doing it and felt such saticfaction when i completed the bottles and loved looking at my work on the counter.
Fall really is one of my favorite seasons, although I can’t believe it is already here. Where does the time go my dearest friend.
Thanks for being my friend and sister; I love you much! Have a sweet weekend. Sending loving thoughts and hugs!

Yum! Pears are my absolute favorite fruit!
I often wonder why so many drinks, treats, etc. are strawberry or cherry flavored, when of course it would be awesome if more things were pear flavored ~~ LOL!
Great job on the canning!
Have you ever dried pears?? They are the best! Like the best candy you've ever tasted :)
Thanks for the recipe, I'll have to give it a try.

So glad that Fall is officially here. We've had warmish~hot temperatures, but some of our Fall decor is up and a pumpkin maple candle flickers away, filling our home with the most delicious scent.

Have a wonderful week.
And happy Fall!!

Oooh Barb, those pears do look delicious! I'm like LeAnn, I really don't enjoy canning anymore but I do love the rewards. My agenda on tomorrows list will be canning tomatoes. Thanks for the yummy recipe. Big Hugs - Marsha

Your pears look lovely Barb! I think pears are one of my favourite fruits. Sadly I don't can anymore as there is only Todd and myself, and we have no extended family here to share them with. I used to enjoy and do a lot of canning/preserving/pickling when my children were growing up and it all got used. Loved the memory of the pear juice and your son. These old remedies are often the best. Love you my sweet friend. Happy Fall! Blessings and hugs. xoxo
