Something old . . .

Today as I was cleaning, I ran across these old magazines.  They were tucked away in an old antique dressing table that sits in my living room.  I forgot I even had them - what a fun find!  I thought I would share - I wish I could have taken pictures of every page for you!

This old Family Circle was dated February 1957.

This was the very best in evening wear in 1957 - times have sure changed. . . or have they?

How many of you still have an Avon Lady?

I heard on the news the other day, that they were going to make Ivory soap smaller, the price will still be the same, you just won't get as much.  Maybe they should start throwing in this brush for  . . . .75 cents!  Do you think if I filled in the form in the corner,  and sent it in they would send it to me?

What would the kids think if you brought this tooth powder home?  Don't laugh, I can remember using this kind of tooth powder!

Can I just tell you how much I love the artwork for their stories!!  It doesn't get any better than this!

We are still making "I Love You" cakes!  I better throw in the actual recipe -

I-Love-You Cake
Makes 1 eight-inch cake

1 package yellow cake mix
1 package fluffy-white-frosting mix
Red food coloring
Shredded coconut

Mix and bake according to directions on box.  Mix frosting according to directions on box and color with food coloring to desired shade of pink - sprinkle with shredded coconut.

That's it . . . that's the recipe!  I would definitely call this semi-homemade!

A 1952 Good Housekeeping

Two more that I loved, although there are about 10 or 12 more to look at!  This Home Companion is dated November 1954, I was one year old.   I especially love the fact that on the address label . . . is my mother's name and address. . . Isn't if funny how you never forget your first address?

My husband so kindly pointed out that I was not even born in 1954~I was born in 1955!  I need to give myself every year that I can!! Maybe I am the "something old"... ;-)

Love these! I have a few I purchased for the paper dolls that came in every issue...can't remember the magazine now, but I have it some place upstairs! Did you just take pics of the pages you posted? I've been thinking of pulling some of the ads in mine and posting about them but couldn't decide if I need to just shoot them with the camera or pull them apart and scan them (which I really didn't want to do)? Your's came out great, whatever you did!

What a treasure you have. These were so fun to look at and they certainly brought back memories to we "older" ones. I remember my mother reading the "Home Companion". Good Housekeeping was an absolute must for reading. I learned so much and got so many good ideas from it. I hope you save some of these as they are priceless. Thanks for sharing.
By the way, I just realized LeAnn was the other grandmother you referred to in your post when I read her latest post and saw your comment. I discovered her when I was reading some of the Simple Woman's Days posts. Did I mention this already? Your little Averie is blessed to have two such wonderful Grandmothers. Nola

Finding some forgotten old magazines rocks!!! It is so cool to look and remember. [And people sell them on E-bay too.]

Yes, everything changes. The fashions. The way adds are presented. The art work on fiction, etc. Everything. Even the very look of the covers. But they are grrrrrrreat!

Btw, I was graduating from HS in 1954. So with you being born a year later, you are a Very Youngin' You! :-)

Btw 'Sweetie,' how is the "winter-down-feeling" coming along? Hope it's better, or you are looking into doing something about it, or...

Know why I ask? Because your blog look is still kind of somber. The pic of the sunrise is lovely but... All the brown, brown, brown is kind of symbolic of, of... being somber.

I know that your blog look, is none of my business. I just..... wondered.... worried...

Those pictures are marvelous. It reminds me of a simpler time... although perhaps it wasn't simpler after all.

One of my favorite things is to look through a book I have of old Norman Rockwell paintings. This puts me in mind of that.

Thanks for sharing.

Happy Spring!
