Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY - September 7,  2010

Outside my window... A beautiful, crisp, September morning!  The sky is blue, no wind and the sun is shining!  Our low last night was 28 degrees, so Autumn has arrived here in Idaho.

I am thinking... About how much I have to get done before it gets too cold outside!   My husband and I got the windows on the front of the house washed yesterday, but the back windows are still waiting!  I have some trim around the garage door that needs to be painted, and I would love to give the garage a good cleaning, now that it is cooler.   The list goes on and on . . .

I am thankful for... Wonderful blogging friends.  Thank you for all the uplifting comments you made on my last post!  I'm already feeling more cheerful!

A thought I'm sharing...

To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter... to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.  ~John Burroughs

From the kitchen... Soup of some kind, maybe taco soup!

I am wearing... Jeans, and an off-white sweater.  I even have on socks!

I am creating...Oh, I have so much that I need to work on . . .

I am going...
I have a meeting this afternoon, and then a quick trip to the grocery store.

I am reading... Nothing right now, although I do have a list of books I want to read.  Maybe I will stop at the library on my way home from the grocery store!

I am hoping... That my tomatoes don't freeze before they get ripe.  It's been so cold at night that we have had to cover them.   We will stop watering them and hope for the best.  I think they are best if they are vine-ripened, but I might have to pick them and let them ripen in the garage.

I am hearing... The sound of a quiet house, my computer humming away and soft music from my playlist.

Around the house... I need to finish my laundry.  I don't know how two people can create so much laundry!

One of my favorite things... The smell of chili sauce bubbling away on the stove.  Nola, at Just Ramblin',  talked about making chili sauce on her blog the other day, and how she loves the way that it makes her house smell.  Last year, I posted my recipe for chili sauce - it's one of my favorite recipes.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Meeting, grocery store, library, yard work, windows, plan a menu for next week.

Here is picture for thought I am sharing...
My handsome grandson, after football practice! He has found that hard work pays off!

Hard work spotlights the character of people:  some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all.  ~Sam Ewing

Your grandson's a cutie. I only got a handful of tomatoes this year. My veggies just didn't do anything. I should be cleaning up the garden, but I like to leave the flowers as long as possible.

Hi Barb - I always enjoy your blog so much! I love your outlook on life and your sweet spirit.

Cute grandson you have there!

Wow - already 28 at night? We'll be lucky to have those temps by Christmas. I know exactly how you feel about feeling "sad" when autumn comes. I love autumn, Thanksgiving,... but after that comes the short days and long nights, everything turning brown and dying off for the winter. I get real blue until about March and I really have to focus and concentrate on not getting depressed.

I like with your suggestions to fight this off. God is my rock and He takes me through this winter season every year. I try to plan something really fun in January/February that I can look forward to.

Enjoy the fall season with me, Barb, and we'll look forward to all that comes with it!

Hi Barb,
You certainly had a chilly morning! I enjoyed reading your daybook...you've been very busy!

Taco soup sounds quite yummy. Your grandson is a handsome boy. I hope he continues to do well in football. Both the quotes you used were excellent!

Enjoy the rest of your week. Take care...hugs. :)

Barb, of course I love the picture of our adorable grandson. We had such fun taking Taylor Jo and Christian to the Idaho State Fair. They are both so precious.
As usual you lifted my heart today with your last two posts. I love your cheerful nature and it is so fun to read about what you are thinking. We hope to be up sometime in the next two months to see Christian play a game.
Hug and love our grandchildren and our children too for me. Love you much! LeAnn

Hi Barb,

I haven't read all your comments, but I did see Kimmie's and I totally agree! Your blog is a breath of fresh air.

You have a very handsome grandson! I hope he has a great football season. Does he have a favorite pro football team?

Loved the quotes, especially the one by John Burroughs. So true that the simple things in life are the most rewarding. At least I've always thought so! Possibly because that's the kind of life I've always lived...simple, not to mention frugal. But, nothing satisfies my soul like a beautiful sunset or gathering the first basket of tomatoes out of the garden or picking the first bouquet of lilacs. Simple pleasures...can't be beat. Thanks for sharing that quote!

Hugs,
Cheryl

You are getting cold temperatures. I love the cooler weather, but not what it is a foretaste of. Hope you can get enough tomatoes to do some chili sauce. I keep crossing my fingers that the rest of mine will ripen. Have you ever made green tomato relish? Seems like my mom would make it with the last of the tomatoes. Will have to see if I have her recipe somewhere. I can't believe how similar we are in so many ways. I've been telling myself I need to get out and clean the garage now and maybe get the freezer defrosted which hasn't been done this summer. Hope I'm not too late for that. Did you make Taco Soup? I
was really craving it a few days back when the temps dropped slightly. It tasted so yummy! That is one reason I love fall and winter--soup! Cute picture of your grandson! As always I've enjoyed your daybook and especially like the quote. Take care. Nola

Happy Spring!
